IOT Landscape and Gaps

Given the critical role played by standards in the ta ke-up of all new kinds of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) systems, an inventory of the current IoT standardisation is a useful (though constantly moving) basis for practitioners in the filed of IoT. Such a landscaping allows to assess the degree of industry and vertical market fragmentation; and to point towards actions that can increase the effectiveness of IoT standardisation, to improve interoperability, and to allow for the building of IoT ecosystems.

However, the coverage of the IoT landscape - and the possibility to develop large-scale interoperable solutions - is not fully guaranteed since some elements in this landscape may be missing. The notion of "gap" may refer to those missing elements as well as the opposite when harmonisation or interoperability between a large number of potential solutions is missing. Three categories of gaps need to be tackled in order to be further dealt with, in particular by standardisation:
  • Technology gaps such as communications paradigms, data models or ontologies, or software availability;
  • Societal gaps such as privacy, energy consumption, or ease of use;
  • Business gaps such as siloed applications, value chain, or investment.

ETSI Specialist Task Force on Landscaping and Gaps (STF 505)

ETSI has launched the STF (Specialist Task Force) 505 on with the participation of CommLedge (Emmanuel Darmois) as Expert. The topics addressed:
  • Landscaping of IoT Standardization
  • Identification of technology, business and usage gaps

Main results

The final results are two Technical Reports (TR):
  • IoT Standards landscape and future evolutions (TR 103 375 - Oct. 2016). ETSI TR 103 375 identifies a number of standards that are available, i.e. that have reached a final stage in a Standards Developing Organisation, and can be used in particular for the work of the EU IoT Large Scale Pilots (LSP) that start their work on January 2017.
  • IoT LSP use cases and standards gaps (TR 103 376 - Oct. 2016). ETSI TR 103 376 identifies a number of gaps in a variety of business sectors (e.g., eHealth, Intelligent Transports or Industrial IoT). Some are common to all of the sectors, other being sector specific.
